MNU's Emergency Operations Team meets regularly to implement our Emergency Operations Plan at levels appropriate to the situation, based on changing conditions. - MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) submitted the signed Certification and Agreement for the student portion of the HEERF grant to the Department of Education on April 10, 2020.
- MNU was scheduled to receive $599,857 for the student portion. However, $703,200 was received on April 28. The excess of $103,343 was returned on May 12, 2020.
- As of this date, none of the funds have been distributed to students. However, the distributions are to begin next week.
- The estimated number of MNU students eligible to participate in the emergency grant program: 1,085.
- As of this date, no students have received the emergency grants. However, that distribution will begin next week.
- The methodology used to determine the amount of the distribution was an equal distribution to all eligible recipients. All MNU students have suffered financial hardship as a result of the COVID pandemic. MNU will also hold back approximately $100,000 of the $599,857 student portion to be distributed on a case-by-case basis to students that have special needs above and beyond the initial funds delivered to them. A committee of appropriate managers will determine and oversee that distribution.
- An email from the President, that included a discussion of the upcoming HEERF distribution, was sent to students and parents on May 11. Two separate emails from the CFO/VP Finance, discussing the HEERF distribution were sent May 12, the first to undergraduate students and their parents, the second to eligible graduate students. Finally, an email with instructions on setting up ACH information in MNU’s payment system, will be sent this week or early next week from the Bursar to all eligible students, to facilitate a quicker distribution of the funds.
MNU Commencement Ceremonies are rescheduled for August 1, at College Church of the Nazarene. Details are being finalized and will be shared with graduates as soon as possible. Please be aware that plans are subject to change based on conditions regarding the pandemic. MNU will continue to work with public health officials and comply with restrictions for the health and wellbeing of graduates, their families, the public and MNU employees.
This is an update regarding MNU’s change in operations to online course delivery and the reduction in residential services due to the COVID-19 situation. Many difficult decisions have been and will continue to be made affecting our constituents. Please know the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, families and community is our primary concern.
We know you have been anticipating an announcement regarding Commencement. MNU is committed to celebrating graduates’ accomplishments with students, families, and university personnel. For this reason, and to maintain compliance with CDC guidelines, the May 2 commencement ceremony is postponed. Our public health agencies advise that the likelihood of having a large gathering while protecting public health by that date cannot be determined. It would be irresponsible to continue to plan as if that will happen. The university is thinking creatively about what the rescheduled celebration will look like and will share those plans with you as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience as we seek to do what is in everyone’s best interest and to honor our human need for community and milestone recognition.
Additionally, all events, whether MNU sponsored or held by an outside entity, have been canceled or postponed through May 2. As the situation unfolds, additional events (largely for Bell Center) may need to be canceled.
Employees, except for on-campus essential personnel, will transition to working remotely immediately, with the goal of having this move complete by Wednesday, March 25, 2020. Employees will receive separate, comprehensive communication regarding these plans.
Questions about refunds of room, board and fees will be answered going forward. Please allow significant time for university personnel to work through a variety of issues to make these determinations before expecting an answer.
Residence halls will be open for students to move out through April 1. We ask residential students to observe this schedule.

Dear Students, Colleagues and Parents,
I want to thank the Pioneer Community for your patience, questions, and understanding in recent days as the COVID-19 situation changed life as we know it. This unprecedented situation has required many quick and difficult decisions in the context of constantly changing information from public agencies as they adjust to changing circumstances.
Our first concern is the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and families. Second is our effort to continue the spring semester so that students may graduate, credits may be completed, and academic progress can continue.
Today we are announcing that beginning March 30, all MNU courses will be conducted online for the remainder of the semester. All Summer 2020 classes will also be moved online. Many School of Professional and Graduate Studies (SPGS) classes are already offered online. Given the availability of remote learning and continued guidance from state and federal officials, we have also made the difficult decision to close residence halls, with limited exceptions.
We know that living near others during a pandemic increases the possibility of transmission of a virus. Therefore, all MNU students who live in the residence halls are encouraged to return home as quickly as possible and no later than April 1. Since this transition extends to the end of the semester, students must take all personal items with them so that they can be fully engaged and ready for the academic remote learning experience. Residential Life staff will follow up with residential students to provide additional details and support for the move out process, including a schedule, as well as support for those students who need to remain on campus.
We understand there are some students who may have personal and financial hardships, or employment reasons to stay on campus, so we are preparing for a limited number of students to remain on campus for the foreseeable future and we will work closely with these students in the transition. Students wishing to apply to stay on campus should complete the application at this link. These will be approved on a limited, case by case basis.
This is a significant change for our residential community. No doubt this will prompt questions regarding refunds for housing and meal plans. Our team in Student Accounts is already hard at work, but this will take some time. Please allow several weeks for the institution to receive guidance on these issues and process individual accounts.
For Traditional Students only, the spring semester is being extended until May 15, 2020. The Traditional summer school semester will be postponed by two weeks and will start May 18, 2020. There are no changes to the SPGS summer semester.
Regardless of where our students reside or how they learn, we remain committed to shaping students’ academic, personal, and spiritual growth, even in this unusual time.
This week and next, faculty are developing means of instruction and course delivery for this change. I’m deeply appreciative of their work and of all the work faculty will be doing in the days and weeks ahead to provide instruction and care for students. Additionally, our teams in Student Development and Spiritual Life are currently identifying and creating opportunities for student engagement throughout the end of the semester.

University leadership is closely monitoring the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and will continue to monitor the situation and follow the guidance of the CDC and other health agencies. This virus spreads rapidly and includes increasing contamination rates requiring reasonable efforts but decisive action be taken to contain its spread and the potential impact on vulnerable populations.
At present, the university has not identified any cases of the virus within our community and is operating “as usual” based on the guidance we are receiving. Because of the rapid spread of the virus in the U.S., the situation may change quickly, and we will initiate appropriate action as necessary to protect our campus community. We will continue to exercise caution for all concerned and will be mindful of the needs of our faculty and staff. We especially want to assure students that their academic programs, university services and support needs will be fully considered as we move forward.
Out of an abundance of caution and to limit exposure to the virus, MNU leadership has decided to extend Spring Break, scheduled for March 14-22, by an additional week from March 23-27 to provide additional time for faculty and staff to prepare a move to distance learning for all face to face classes, should it be necessary to do so. This will provide a two-week break to permit continued monitoring of the virus situation and provide time for additional preparation and response to these issues.
The traditional undergraduate student population will be welcome to return to residence halls on Sunday evening, March 29, 2020, with classes resuming on Monday, March 30. Students leaving for Spring Break should take textbooks, supplies and materials necessary and be prepared to return to classes on March 30. Should classes be moved to an online format, the university has computers located across campus that are accessible for students who do not otherwise have computer access. Additional communication will be provided prior to the return of students regarding class format, preparation for return and other instructions.
All members of the campus community should monitor their MNU email as the primary source for further instructions. This page will provide the most updated information along with information regarding events, program cancellations or rescheduling.
Any student who has experienced a cough or shortness of breath or has traveled to a high-risk area(s) should NOT return to campus on March 29 and should contact their health provider before returning to campus. All university-sponsored or reimbursed travel by faculty, staff and students is immediately suspended unless specifically approved by university officials in advance.
All current online distance classes, accelerated nursing programs, graduate counseling or other professional and graduate classes may continue to meet or may be converted to a distance-learning format and function as scheduled, unless it is determined that circumstances require changes approved by the designated cabinet member, dean and department chair.
We recognize select students may need to remain on campus for the extended Spring Break due to athletics, as international students, those in clinical rotations, student teachers, employment or for students who may not have off-campus options. Residential Life will identify and must approve, all requests for students desiring to remain as residents on campus. During the break, visitors, family and non-residential guests will not be allowed to visit residence halls without the approval of Residence Life.
During the extended portion of Spring Break, all university facilities and offices will remain open for regular hours including the Campus Center and Mabee Learning Commons. Faculty and Staff will receive internal communications and updates regarding operations and functions within their areas. Faculty or staff who become ill should not report to work and should utilize university PTO provisions and may be required to provide physicians clearance prior to reporting for work.
Dining services will be available to resident students on meal plans and to those who are approved by their sponsor and Residential Life to be on campus during the extended week of break. Pioneer College Catering services will implement its action plan and will modify its operational and serving processes during this period. Maintenance and custodial staff will initiate additional disinfecting or cleaning procedures in all occupied buildings and hand sanitizer will be distributed to all classrooms, offices and common areas.
The university will continue to monitor the situation and further announcements will be issued as necessary. During the extended break all scheduled campus events, public events and use of campus facilities by outside groups may be canceled, rescheduled or reviewed on a case by case basis to minimize the potential spread of this virus on campus or with the public. The sponsoring group or department will be responsible for the communication of canceled or rescheduled events.
I want to assure the campus community that there is no immediate threat or cause for alarm. Current information has indicated that our area is not at immediate risk, but definitive action is necessary out of a serious need for caution and care. Students can be assured that the university will keep them fully informed and that their classwork and academic progress will be a high priority consideration, especially for our seniors and those contemplating graduation. They should not be alarmed or have undue concern.
These are exceptionally challenging times and as a Christ-centered community, we have a unique responsibility to demonstrate compassion, long suffering and patience during these difficult circumstances. I am confident that as Pioneers we can work together to be resolute and deal with these issues as we become even stronger in our commitment to serve and support each other.

The safety and wellbeing of our students and employees is our highest priority. MNU is actively monitoring the developments of (COVID-19). As the situation unfolds, we are working with Johnson County Health and Environment (JCHE) to provide our community with the most up-to-date information. Our Emergency Response Team meets to monitor the situation and implement established protocol as needed. While the progression of COVID-19 is still emerging, the CDC is reporting that for the general American public, who are unlikely to be exposed to this virus at this time, the immediate health risk from COVID-19 is considered low.
In the meantime, the campus continues to operate normally. We are increasing sanitation throughout campus and educating the campus community on practices to help mitigate the spread of germs. We will continue to update the communication here as new information is learned about COVID-19.

Will I get a room and board refund?
- Room and board refunds will be prorated from the day residence halls were officially closed until the last official housing day of the semester. Refunds may vary for students, who could not return home, still remain on campus, or departed at various times. Refunds will be calculated for each student based on federal guidelines, student account status, financial aid requirements and other related factors. Refunds will be processed and issued after May 15, 2020.
Moving to Online Coursework & Changes to Semester
All coursework will be online by March 30, 2020. Residents must move out of dorms by April 1, 2020. The Spring semester has been extended to May 15, 2020 to assist anyone having difficulty.

Do I need a doctor’s note to return to campus if I’ve been sick?
- Yes, anyone who has been sick must return to campus with a doctor’s note clearing them. Students should give doctor’s notes to Academic Affairs; MNU employees to HR.
What If I need a place to live and cannot move out of the dorms?
- If you are experiencing personal hardship, financial hardship, or have employment that would require you to remain in the residence halls after April 1, please complete the online application, keeping in mind that approval is not guaranteed.
Due to the Coronavirus emergency I’m working 7 days a week. I need to postpone my education until this settles down. What should I do?
- We want to work with you to achieve your academic goals while also being sensitive to your current situation. Our institution has many options including “in progress” status which allows us to extend class time as “life” requires. We need to determine all your options. Why Supersize the Semester
I am wondering why the school year is able to be extended 2 extra weeks when we only missed one week of class, and some professors are doing homework online during the second week of spring break.
- Please always feel free to contact us with any questions. The federal government requires we have 30 weeks to our semester. With the additional spring break week, we had to add one week as you noted below. However, we are anticipating students and faculty may become sick and have difficulty completing the semester within the timeframe we have. For this reason, an additional week was added to safeguard against falling below the 30 week mark for any reason. I hope this helps.

How will we handle Senior Comps?
- We will work with all students who still have to take senior comprehensive exams—we will either waive the exam or offer it remotely. Please be watching for information from your academic advisor and/or department chair as they are creating plans to meet your needs.
Can Faculty Come on Campus?
- Faculty may not be on campus. If there are extenuating circumstances faculty must call campus safety to get into a space. Any unresolvable tech issues should be routed to IT and an appointment made.
Is the MNU Student Counseling Center still seeing students?
- We are seeing students who were already set up in our system IF you reside in Kansas. If you don’t, then contact your MNU intern/counselor and discuss options. For support, you can also contact Elizabeth Diddle, director, at 913-544-7520 or email@example.com.
Will there be changes to my VISA if MNU goes to online classes?
- Students will be allowed to continue their program whether they stay in the U.S. or if they go home to their country if we go online. Visit this site for the most recent information for F-1 students, https://www.ice.gov/covid19 and click on “nonimmigrant students.”
What paperwork do I need if I decide to return to my home country?
- You must make sure you have a valid signature on your I-20 form. The signature is good for one year. If the form was signed prior to August 2019, please have Jazmine Cabello-Parra, Undergraduate DSO for International Students sign it before you leave the U.S. Her phone number is 913.971.3779.

Commencement Ceremonies Postponed
- The decision was made to postpone commencement due to the stay-at-home order and restriction on events with an attendance of more than 10 people. The University administration is considering options for holding a commencement ceremony and will notify graduates as soon as a decision is made regarding this event.
Has graduation been moved to April 1?
- No. We apologize for any confusion caused by previous communication. Grad Finale (April 1) is when you pick up your gowns, order rings or announcements, etc. and receive directions on what to expect from graduation.
Graduation or commencement is the actual ceremony on May 2, 2020. A decision regarding commencement is to be determined.
Parents Asking about Students Getting Back to Campus
What if my student gets stopped on his/her way back to campus after the second week of spring break and we have no family in the area to help him/her?
- We will help your student navigate his/her way either back home or to the university. This may require additional cost on the part of the family, but we will not allow your student to be “stranded” in an unfamiliar area, in limbo as they try to return to campus.
What if my student is at home and the university opens but our area is quarantined, and my student can’t get back to campus or is sick and can’t return?
- We will not allow any student’s academic standing or progress to be adversely impacted by this virus or how we respond to it. Our technology allows us to broadcast or record live class sessions, move content to an online learning environment, and when necessary, extend the semester or grant “in progress” as needed. Please keep the student’s academic advisor aware of the situation. Send communications as things develop. Reach out and let us work with you on a plan to meet your child’s needs.

Residence Halls Information
Residents and families,
You may have questions regarding residential operations and what the next several weeks will look like, so we have compiled a list of common questions and their answers. Of course, if you have concerns that are not addressed here, you may contact the appropriate RE or the office of Student Development (913.971.3297) for information.
Can I leave my car on campus over the summer?
- Yes, you may leave your vehicle on campus over the summer. You should notify Campus Safety and park your vehicle between Land Gym and Dobson.
Is the cafeteria going to be open?
- Yes. The cafeteria will be resuming take-out only meal service beginning Monday, March 23.
- Breakfast hours: 8:00 a.m.—9:00 a.m. (Breakfast will not be served on Saturdays)
- Lunch hours: 11:30 a.m.—12:30 p.m.
- Dinner hours: 5:00 p.m.—6:00 p.m.
Will I be receiving a refund for school or housing?
- The institution’s approach to refunds will be informed by government decisions related, but not limited to, federal financial aid and FEMA emergency relief funds. Please allow several weeks for the institution to provide guidance on these issues.
How do I sign up for housing for the 2020-2021 school year?
- The Residential Life office will post housing applications online and will send an e-mail to all students when this is available.
Can I store furniture or personal items on campus during the summer?
- No. For residents who are unable to remove their belongings and check out of the residence halls before Wednesday, April 1, contact your RE to discuss other arrangements.
What if I can’t remove my belongings from the dorm during the dates that I’m assigned to?
- In order to limit the number of people in each building, we highly encourage everyone to do their best to adhere to the schedule suggested by MNU. We understand that this schedule may be impossible to coordinate with your or your family’s availability. If this is the case, we are willing to work with what is best for you.

Where can I find an off-campus job opportunity?
- On the MNU portal, click on the ‘College Central Online Job Board’ icon. From there, you can activate or login to your account using your MNU email and begin searching through job listings. We will continue to post jobs throughout the semester. Email email@example.com with any questions you may have about College Central Network.
How do I request accommodations?
- Email firstname.lastname@example.org to request accommodations. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities.
The purpose of these laws is to remove barriers that prevent qualified individuals with disabilities from enjoying the same opportunities available to persons without disabilities. A student requesting an accommodation based on a disability must have a disability covered by law and be qualified with or without reasonable accommodation. At the postsecondary level, students are required to self-identify and affirmatively make a request for an accommodation. The University is only obligated to provide reasonable accommodations, and it is not required to fundamentally alter its programs to accommodate a student. Thus, not all accommodation requests will necessarily be granted.
Registration for Traditional Students
- Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 registration for traditional undergraduate students is rescheduled to begin on April 6 with the following schedule.
- Seniors – April 6
- Juniors – April 8
- Sophomores – April 10
- Freshmen – April 12
Course Offerings are available in SSB and registration information will be sent to advisors and students at their MNU email.
Registration for School of Nursing and School of Professional and Graduate Studies
- Students enrolled in the School of Nursing and School of Professional and Graduate Studies will be registered for courses through normal processes either online through SSB or by departments working with the Registrar’s Office.
- Transcripts will be available only through our online ordering service https://www.mnu.edu/resources/registrar/request-transcripts and will have an estimated processing time of seven to ten business days depending on mail services. In-office pick-up and Express Mail options are suspended until further notice. Please note transcripts cannot be released if there are outstanding holds on the student account.
- Any forms or certifications needing processing can be sent to email@example.com and we will respond as necessary and in the order they are received. Any emails need to be sent through secure @mnu.edu email accounts.
- Any requests for updates to student records can be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org for processing and will be routed to the appropriate staff member.
Traditional Students Withdrawing from a Class or College
- The last date to drop a traditional class or withdraw from college is May 8, 2020 for the Spring semester. A grade of “W” for withdrawn will be recorded for the traditional student. The traditional refund schedule for the semester remains the same.
WITHDRAWING FROM A CLASS: Traditional students wishing to drop a class should submit their withdrawal information to email@example.com from their secure @mnu.edu email address. Include in the email the following information: M#, Student’s Name, Class to be dropped – CRN, Subject (for example - PSYC, BLIT, ACCT) and Class No (for example 1203 or 4883 or 3903). Include as much information as possible. Review your class schedule in SSB to make sure the correct withdrawal was processed. FOR FRESHMEN – withdrawals will be forwarded to your advisor for approval before processed by the Registrar.
WITHDRAWING FROM COLLEGE: Traditional students wishing to withdrawal from college should contact Dennis Troyer, firstname.lastname@example.org, who will help you with the process of withdrawing from college.
NOTE: The School of Professional and Graduate Studies withdrawal and refund schedule for the semester remains the same.
- Degrees take approximately 6-8 weeks to award after final grades are posted and all degree requirements have been met. Once a degree has been awarded it will show immediately on the academic transcript. Diplomas are mailed approximately 6-8 weeks after a degree is awarded and are mailed to the address provided on the graduation application. Please note, diplomas and transcripts cannot be released if there are outstanding holds on the student account.
I’m applying to (graduate school, take my professional industry-specific test, such as NCLEX, CPA, etc.). The process requires the MNU official seal on the application/document. How can I get that completed? Is there a charge for this service?
- If you are able to scan and email us a copy of your completed form to email@example.com (the information on the form needs to be complete so we can verify its accuracy prior to providing the MNU seal), we can apply an electronic seal on the form and send it back to you electronically.
- If the form needs to be hard-copy original, you can send us the completed form via postal mail (we are gathering and processing mail within 7-10 business days) and we can verify the information and provide the seal. We can then either return the paperwork to you, or if you prefer, send directly to the recipient if you provide the correct address and contact information. Be sure to specify where you want the paperwork sent after we have completed the seal process.
- There is no charge for either service.

Practice daily preventative care:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
- Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
What to Do If You Become Ill
Any member of our community suspecting they have contracted influenza or COVID-19 should stay home. Residential students should contact their resident assistant to inform them of their condition.
MNU students, faculty and staff should call their health care provider immediately for care.
Counseling and Community
Some members of our campus community may be directly affected by the virus without themselves being sick. The news, and especially the uncertainty, can feel scary. Some also have concerns regarding family members and friends in other areas who are sick, or who are at increased risk. If you feel distressed in any way, we want to help.
