Tyler Blake, PhD, professor of English, and 1988 MNU grad, claimed the coveted Golden Brain Award at last week's 7X7 Challenge during MNU's second annual Week of Scholarship.
Blake's presentation “Thoreau-ly Pioneer: The Way of the Ox,” examined how modern-day pioneers can benefit from a consideration of the traits exhibited by the oxen that westering peoples of the nineteenth century followed behind as they journeyed from the Kansas City area into an unknown and sometimes hostile environment. Drawing upon the words of one of that century's greatest philosophers, Henry David Thoreau, a pioneer of the mind, sought to help listeners arrive at new destinations of simplified living in this ever more complicated universe.
Blake is shown here with Arvin Oke, PhD, professor of psychology at MNU, for whom the award is named. Oke is a fellow with the NIH sponsored Center of Excellence in Parkinson’s Research, Univ. of Kentucky.
