Bob Moore, founder of Bob’s Red Mill, a leader in whole grain and gluten free products, was a guest speaker at MNU today. Meeting with business students in the morning and speaking at the MNU Tuesday Business Professionals Luncheon, Moore told his story of building his business, not once, but twice (after a fire destroyed his first mill). At age 81, Moore gifted his company to his employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Program.
Moore speaks openly of his faith in God and its impact on his business. MNU President David Spittal says Moore’s remarkable devotion is inspirational.
“Bob Moore is truly a “doer of the Word,” Spittal said. “His faith and commitment to the truths of scripture overflow into the lives of the people around him and the business he has dedicated to God. He discovered early in his life that business and biblical principles are compatible.”
Bob’s Red Mill products are known for their quality. Using stone grinding methods the company says ensures the most nutritious parts of the whole grain remain. Their gluten free products have also made the company well known in grocery and health food segments.
MNU’s food service provider, Pioneer College Caterers, pulled out all the stops at the luncheon by serving several Bob’s Red Mill items on the menu. Quinoa and long grain wild rice sautéed with cranberries and scallions, cornbread muffins and 10-grain dinner rolls were popular at the buffet.
Yorton Clark, PhD, chair of the Department of Business Administration, said students were struck by the level of passion Moore shows for his business, his product and his employees.
“They enjoyed his passion and commitment to what he does,” Clark said. “That’s important as an entrepreneur. They were impressed with how grateful he is to his employees. That resonates with our students because at MNU it’s more about being a person of significance in what one contributes to the Lord and to others. It’s significance over success.”
