Pirates of Penzance
MidAmerica Nazarene University presents Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance,” March 2-5 at Bell Cultural Events Center. The comedic musical features swashbuckling high jinks on the seven seas with a band of immature pirates, a squad of bumbling policemen, and a bevy of beautiful maidens.
Preparations for the production began in the fall and have included stage combat instruction from Jeremy Riggs, well-known stunt director and award-winning actor who is a member of the Society of American Fight Directors, and winner of several awards for fight choreography.
Co-directors Jay Coombes, a Kansas City favorite, and Heather Tinker, who assisted with MNU's production last year of "The Music Man," have worked with actors to create a high-quality production that melds musical and comedic talents. Tinker says the athletic stage combat, rollicking vocal numbers and outrageous antics will delight audiences.
“They’ll enjoy the wild adventures, miscommunications, and comedic characters in Pirates,” Tinker states. “There’s plenty of action too. The stage combat features swords, daggers, and clubs--but all in good fun. Even the girls get in on the action.”
Times for the event are March 2 at 10 a.m., and March 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the matinee are $5. Tickets for the evening performances are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (60+), $10 for MNU faculty/staff, and $5 for all students.
To obtain tickets call Bell Center Box Office at (913) 971-3636.
