The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has reaffirmed MidAmerica Nazarene University’s accreditation following a comprehensive institutional review process that evaluated the university’s mission, governance, academic quality, student support, resources and institutional effectiveness.
The reaffirmation follows a multi-year process that included extensive self-study, peer review and an on-site evaluation conducted in February by an HLC peer review team. The team recommended reaffirmation of accreditation and evaluated every core component across all four HLC criteria as “met.”
MNU President Jon North said the outcome reflects the university’s commitment to its mission and the strength of its academic and institutional practices.
“This is a complete and unconditional affirmation of the mission, integrity, academic quality and institutional health of MNU,” Dr. North said.
In addition to reaffirming accreditation, the peer review team recommended MNU for the HCL Open Pathway in its next accreditation cycle. The Open Pathway, which is not available to all institutions, allows universities to focus on institutional improvement projects designed to strengthen effectiveness and student outcomes between comprehensive reviews.
“The recommendation for the Open Pathway reflects the review team’s confidence in MNU’s ongoing institutional effectiveness and commitment to continuous improvement,” said Dr. Abby Hodges, vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer.
Preparation for the reaffirmation process spanned approximately 18 months and involved faculty, staff and university leadership from across campus. The process included evaluation of academic programs, student learning, governance, financial stewardship and strategic planning, affirming the strength of MNU’s educational mission and institutional practices.
“This process provided an important opportunity to reflect on who we are and how we serve our students,” Hodges said. “HLC’s decision reflects the dedicated work of faculty and staff across campus and their commitment to providing a Christ-centered education that prepares students for purposeful lives of leadership and service.”
Accreditation through HLC assures students, families and stakeholders that MNU meets established standards of quality and accountability while continuing to invest in educational excellence, student support and its mission of developing servant leaders.
