MidAmerica Nazarene University has been nationally recognized as one of 478 institutions named a School of Opportunity by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The designation is a prestigious distinction awarded to colleges and universities committed to providing pathways to educational access and student success. MNU is one of only five universities in Kansas to be recognized across all sectors and sizes of institutions with this designation.
The Schools of Opportunity project highlights institutions that intentionally and effectively support students from all backgrounds—particularly those who have been historically underserved. To be considered, schools must demonstrate a deep commitment to excellence across a wide range of practices, including holistic admissions, high-quality advising, and support for student well-being.

“The majority of students apply to college with the hope it is a path to opportunity, and the job they’ve dreamt about,” said Timothy F.C. Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation. “This work is about ensuring that institutions are recognized when they empower students to reach their goals and succeed.”
MNU’s selection is a result of its ongoing efforts to create a learning environment where all students can thrive. The university’s strategic focus on student engagement, mentoring, and wraparound support services played a key role in the designation.
“MNU has always been a place that supports students who might feel like earning a college degree is just out of reach—or those who have tried college elsewhere and realize they want a place where their strengths are appreciated and their challenges are seen as opportunities to grow,” said Dr. Abby Hodges, vice president for academic affairs. “This classification just gives a name to what everyone who has experienced MNU already knows.”
This recognition aligns with MNU’s mission to provide transformational education shaped by Christian values, ensuring that students not only succeed academically but also grow personally and spiritually.
“Whether it’s winter clothing for students from warmer climates, free tutoring or mentoring students, our faculty and staff work hard every day to ensure that our students have the resources and support that they need to be successful,” Hodges added.

Its selection as a School of Opportunity is recognition of MNU’s dedication to leveling the playing field for students from all walks of life. MNU continues to lead with the purpose of ensuring that every student is supported, challenged, and prepared for meaningful lives after graduation.
