Purpose

The church matching scholarship program provides financial assistance to MidAmerica Nazarene University students in the undergraduate program who live on the North Central Region and are sponsored by their local Nazarene church.

Policy

  1. Traditional undergraduate students are eligible to receive up to a $1,000 annual MidAmerica Church Matching Scholarship when they attend MidAmerica and their local church pays 100% or more of the District approved educational budget for the previous Assembly year. The scholarship provides a match, on a $3 to $1 basis, to the local church’s scholarship of up to $250.
  2. An Innovative Adult Education (IAE) student may qualify for a one-for-one match ($250) for their academic year, if all qualifications listed above are met.
  3. The Church Matching Scholarship is designed to be a recognition of the student by the local church and as such must be awarded from church funds. The scholarship is not designed as a method of directing designated gifts to individuals or as a method of converting personal The scholarship is not designed as a method of directing designated gifts to individuals or as a method of converting personal tuition payments into “scholarship funds.”

Awards must be made to students as an act of the Church Board or duly designated church committee and may not be a designated gift from an individual or relative.

  1. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours per semester to qualify and the money will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Those students attending only one semester will be eligible for one half the matching scholarship amount (up to $500). A student may receive a pro-rated amount for 9-11 hours if they are graduating at the end of that semester. This program does not apply to summer school. Scholarship funds may be applied to tuition, university fees and residential charges (on-campus housing and board). The award is a scholarship and may not be converted to cash value beyond the areas of applicable charges mentioned above.
  2. A student is eligible to receive a Church Matching Scholarship from only one church during a given academic year.
  3. An eligible student must be a member of his/her local church or deemed to be "active" in the local church by the action of the pastor or Church Board.
  4. Scholarship funds will be credited to a student’s account after receipt of the church’s scholarship gift.

Procedures

  1. Eligibility is based on 100% payment of the church's educational budget for the assembly year prior to the applicable academic year. The final date for applying budget credit for the purpose of determining a church’s eligibility for matching scholarship funds will be the last day of enrollment for the fall semester.
  2. The local church decides to participate in the Church Matching Scholarship and determines:
a.) The amount per student to be awarded (up to $250 will be matched on a $3 to $1 basis for traditional students, and a $1 to $1 basis for IAE students, although churches may decide to award more than a $250 scholarship).
b.) The eligibility of the students (eligible students include those wh are members of the local church or deemed as “active” by the pastor or Church Board.)
c.) The application and screening procedures to be used prior to granting the scholarship.
  3. The local church publicizes the program to the congregation and encourages participation by eligibile students.
  4. The church notifies the University by forwarding the “Participation Notification” form to the MNU Cashier’s office, along with a check (payable to MNU) for the full amount of the local church’s portion of the scholarship.
  5. The scholarship will be matched by the University to the stated maximum. This amount will be divided into two equal payments and credited to the student’s account during the fall and spring semesters.
  6. While churches are encouraged to make their full scholarship gift in the fall, students attending only the spring semester are also eligible. Church scholarships must be received by Oct. 1 for the fall semester, and Feb. 1 for the spring semester, in order to credit an account prior to interest being applied. Interest penalties will be applicable if funds are not received by these dates.
